Adam Lambert

One thing is certain, there were a lot of talented artists this year, and however, Adam Lambert stood out the most.

Popular “POP” music is a genre that touches base to a huge audience. As there are many talented artists and bands that often identify with just one genre, the moment they reach a big audience, they are destined to be world-class superstars. Thus, Lambert for one is a reality.

Lambert was born in Indianapolis on January 29, 1982, to mother Leila, an interior designer; and father Ebder, a program manager for Novatel Wireless. At 19, he worked by performing on a cruise ship for ten months. His beginnings were ushered by taking chances and opportunities. However, his career boomed until he joined and won the American Idol 2009.

Lambert’s first studio album was released on November 23, 2009 entitled For your Entertainment. As of April 2012, the album had sold nearly 2 million copies worldwide which was certified gold in the US in June 2010.

Moreover, he appeared on the cover of Out magazine in their 2009 “Out 100″ issue, sparking controversy as Out’s publisher issued him an open letter questioning the “gayness” of his image. In April, he became one of People Magazine’s Most Beautiful People 2010.

Lambert’s own music has been influenced by numerous genres including classic rock, pop, and electronic music.

He is best known for his exaggerated performance style and thorough attention to detail in all aspects of his personal presentation. He draws upon extensive stage experience in the ease with which he can refine and define his image through fashion and other imagery, which are essential to how he chooses to inhabit his songs, rivet his audiences and showcase his individuality.

You cannot help, but love this man. One would have never seen an artist this year who can deliver such incredible vocals while engaging crowds making you relate what they are singing about. Lambert’s vocal ability has no limits and when he takes off, it’s as if the world is painted red. Lambert is clearly the best popular music singer the world has ever heard.

Jeff Healey

A blind Canadian jazz guitar singer, Jeff Healey, who can see through the eyes of music.

Jeff Healey is one of the Canada’s most successful exports and one of the world’s most celebrated guitarists, the Jeff Healey Band sold millions of records. Healey lost his sight at the age of one, after developing eye cancer. He began playing guitar when he was three years old and began performing with his band Blues Direction at the age of 17. Healey formed the Jeff Healey Band in 1985, featuring bassist Joe Rockman and drummer Tom Stephen. This trio released one single on its own Forte record label, which led to a contract with Arista Records. The Jeff Healey Band released their debut album, See the Light, in 1988 and the guitarist immediately developed a devoted following in blues-rock circles. Featuring the hit single “Angel Eyes,” the record went platinum in the U.S. While the Jeff Healey Band’s subsequent records were popular, none were as successful as the debut.

What made Jeff Healey different from other blues-rockers was also what kept some listeners from accepting him as anything other than a novelty — the fact that the blind guitarist played his Fender Stratocaster on his lap, not standing up. With the guitar in his lap, Healey could make unique bends and hammer-ons, making his licks different and more elastic than most of the competition. Unfortunately, his material leaned toward standard AOR blues-rock, which rarely let him cut loose, but when he did; his instrumental prowess could be shocking.

In 2008, a month before the release of his last studio-recorded blues album, Mess of Blues, Healey died from cancer.

No doubt, his unusual story embarked in the history of music. He taught us to see what he had seen- the beauty of music.

Ray Charles

A multi-talented blind black musician who grew up blind.

Ray Charles Robinson was an American singer-songwriter, musician and composer known as Ray Charles. He was blind by the age of 7, and his mother sent him to a state-sponsored school, the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine, Florida—where he learned to read, write and arrange music in Braille. He also learned to play piano, organ, sax, clarinet and trumpet. The breadth of his musical interests ranged widely, from gospel to country, to blues.

He was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into his early recordings with Atlantic Records. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. While with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Frank Sinatra called Charles “the only true genius in show business,” although Charles downplayed this notion.

“I can’t retire from music any more than I can retire from my liver. You’d have to remove the music from me surgically—like you were taking out my appendix.”– Ray Charles

Ray Charles died from acute liver disease Thursday June 10, 2004. He was 73. He left behind a long list of hits and Grammy awards and the musicians he influenced are as diverse in genre as the music he wrote, arranged, performed and recorded. The great Ray Charles was an explorer who returned time and again from expeditions across musical boundaries to give us, in his own unique way, melodious stories and charts of his adventures. In so doing he changed what had previously been only a black and white territorial paper map of American music into a 3-D, solid terrain model, full of color.

Haeran Hong

“Among the fresh voices heard, the most finished were those of Haeran Hong, a soprano who sang with gleaming tone and deftly negotiated ornate lines as Dalinda, Ginevra’s confidante; Anthony Roth Costanzo, an intense, engaging countertenor, who played the treacherous Polinesso; and Shenyang.” Steve Smith, an American musician, said.
The2011 International Queen Elizabeth Grand Prize winner Haeran Hong has been noted as “charming of form, manner, and voice.” As a soprano singer, Hong has already performed various leading roles including Adina in L’Elisird’Amore, Gilda in Rigoletto, Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte. Soprano Sophie Bevan was awarded as young singer of the year at the 2013 International Opera Awards.
A graduate of the Benjamin Britten International Opera School, she studied as a Karaviotis Scholar with Lillian Watson and was awarded the Queen Mother Rose Bowl Award.
Her grandfather is the late Roger Bevan, head of music at Downside School and the subject of a memorable television documentary in 1980 called Harmony at Parsonage Farm. His 14 children all inherited the musical gene in various degrees, as in turn have their issue. One of them is the Sophie’s father, David.
Sophie is the eldest of eight, all of whom are musically gifted. Through this outsized family runs an astonishing vein of talent that is already bearing professional dividends for Sophie and two sisters, Mary and Daisy.
She enrolled at the Royal College of Music. Doing well at music college is one thing, but making the transition from talented student to successful professional is quite another. This, says Bevan, is where the Classical Opera Company (COC) comes into the picture.
Among her best performances, Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro and Pamina in The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera House has been the most remarkable.

Yuna

The first Malaysian to conquer the American market, Yunalis Mat Zara’ai, or commercially known as Yuna, has captured the ears of many Malaysians and people across the globe through her organic blend of contemporary pop, acoustic folk, and soulful R&B.
Born on November 14, 1986 in AlorSetar, Kedah, Malaysia, Yuna began composing her own songs when she was 14 years old. When she reached 19, she learned how to play guitar and also started to perform her composed songs.
Since 2006, she has been performing in several acoustic shows and events in various parts of Malaysia.
In 2012, the diva has shined. Her new single “Live your Life” debuted in iTunes which lifted her career up. The track was produced by a Grammy Award-winning producer Pharrell Williams. In addition, her self-titled album was also released in which it received accolades and positive response from various critics.
Yuna was also awarded by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri NajibRazak with a National Youth Icon Award, for her exceptional achievements in arts.
Since then, Yuna has become an international singing sensation. In fact, the Multiple Grammy-winning producer David Foster excitedly invited Yuna to become part of the Verve Music Group, in which Foster is the head of the creative operations.
Despite her successful musical career in America, Yuna has been very true to her Malaysian roots. Apparently, she has been enjoying the fun she had in her recordings in Malaysia as well as the amazing working atmosphere for musicians and artists in America. She has enjoyed both worlds.
I don’t really like the idea of putting myself in any category now. But as a pop artist, I feel like it’s easy for me to maneuver from one thing to another and try different things.  To me, it’s all just music, and if you have good lyrics and good melodies and good production, people won’t care what you call it.  I think that people are looking for music that’s real and honest and that they can relate to emotionally.  I think we’ve created that with Nocturnal.  The whole project was a challenge for me, but I’m very happy with the way it turned out”, she concluded in her self-titled blog.

Her fourth and last studio album to date, Up!, was released in November 2002 and has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

After Divas, Shania Twain wrote and/or sang background vocals with her then husband Robert John “Mutt” Lange the songs, “If Walls Could Talk” and “Goodbye’s (The Saddest Word)” for Celine Dion.
